What Does Authenticity Actually Mean?
Authenticity has become a bit of a buzzword.
Some people roll their eyes at it. Others feel strongly that it’s essential.
I’m in the second camp.
But the question is — what does it really mean?
For me, it comes down to something very simple:
Authenticity is believing what you say, and saying what you believe.
Why Authenticity Matters in Communication
In leadership presence coaching and executive presence coaching, authenticity is one of the most powerful drivers of connection.
People can feel the difference between something that’s rehearsed… and something that’s real.
If you’re repeating words that you don’t truly believe, it shows.
If you’re speaking from genuine conviction, that shows too.
And that difference has a direct impact on your confident presence and your ability to influence.
Beyond Scripts and Talking Points
Organizations often create messaging — value propositions, positioning statements, brand language.
That’s important.
But if those messages stay at the surface level, they don’t land.
In business development communication training and AEC presentation skills, we see this challenge often:
People know what they’re supposed to say.
But they don’t fully believe it yet.
So it sounds like a script instead of a story.
What Authenticity Looks Like in an Organization
Imagine an organization where every team member:
- Understands the value of the company
- Has seen that value in action
- Can speak about it in their own words
That’s authenticity at scale.
Instead of repeating lines, people are telling real stories — about projects, clients, outcomes, and impact.
In business speaking, sales pitch coaching, and shortlist interview coaching, that kind of authenticity is what differentiates teams.
Because it feels real.

When you speak from what you genuinely believe:

It’s not about being perfect.

How to Practice Authenticity
If you want to strengthen your authenticity, start with awareness.
Ask yourself:
- Do I believe what I’m saying?
- Where have I seen this value in action?
- How would I explain this in my own words?
Then practice speaking from that place.
Not just in formal settings like AEC interview preparation or presentations — but in everyday conversations, networking coaching environments, and client interactions.
The more you do it, the more natural it becomes.
Speak From the Heart
Authenticity isn’t about being unfiltered or saying whatever comes to mind.
It’s about alignment.
Your words match your beliefs.
Your message reflects your experience.
And your presence feels genuine to the people around you.
So whether you’re a leader, an individual contributor, or part of a larger team — look for opportunities to speak from the heart.
Because when you do, people don’t just hear you.
They believe you.
