You Are The Show

Professionals can’t rely on their slides and backgrounds to make them present professionally. You carry the show, and Dean Hyers talks through simple areas of focus to make sure that you’re bringing MORE to your client presentations, team presentations, and the ones you do to land the work.

You Don’t Need the Background to Carry You

Welcome to another edition of my green wall—not to be confused with my “green” wall; that’s another episode entirely. The green wall is doing absolutely nothing for me today, and that’s the point. It’s not helping me, and it doesn’t need to—because I don’t need anything to help me.

A lot of you out there present to clients, to selection committees, to your teams, and you lean heavily on what’s behind you or around you. The fancy background. The lighting. The décor. The set. But let me tell you—you are the presentation.

You Are the Show

Earlier in my career, I thought everything around me reflected on me, so I wanted gorgeous backdrops and perfect lighting. And yes… as the years go by, lighting does matter more than you expect. But the truth is: you can’t always control that, and you don’t need to.

The green wall isn’t bringing anything to this moment. I have to carry the show. And that’s the attitude I want you to bring into every presentation: whether you’ve got a slide deck, a great setup, or a cluttered office behind you—you are still the show.

Your Energy Is the Real Visual Aid

I want you to focus on two energy sources that matter more than any camera background:

  • Your feelings. Are you feeling what you’re talking about? Do you feel the love for your work? The seriousness of the moment? The empathy for the people you’re discussing? Those emotional drivers matter—they’re what make your message real.
  • Your warmth. Do you genuinely care about the people you’re talking to? Are you focused on delivering value to them? Warmth is presence. Warmth is human connection.

These are the sources that make your presence shine. They’re what bring you into the presentation instead of just the information.

This Is the Moment to Elevate Your Presence

AI is here—and it’s getting emotionally convincing. Visuals are getting sharper. Delivery is getting smoother. There will be a time when AI can out-presence you if you don’t bring your essence forward.

So lean into your emotions. Lean into your conviction. Push more of yourself through your delivery. And never rely on a background or a slide deck to make you look professional.

You are the show.
