How to Deliver a Powerful Holiday Toast

Folks, it’s the holidays—and that means it’s a great opportunity to practice your presenting skills in a fun, practical way. Because during the holidays, there’s this wonderful tradition: the toast.

A lot of people don’t toast as well as they could. So, if you have something meaningful or heartfelt to say this season, here are three quick tips to make your toast stand out.

1. Stand Up

Don’t deliver your toast sitting down. Take the moment to physically rise, draw attention, and assume a natural position of leadership. Standing sets the tone that what you’re about to say matters—and it cues others to listen.

2. Take a Pause

When you stand, don’t rush into talking. Too many people start speaking before anyone realizes a toast has begun. Take a short pause. Let the room settle. Let people notice that you’re about to speak. That silence creates anticipation—and attention.

3. Talk to People, Not “the Group”

As you speak, make eye contact with individuals. Deliver a few words to one person, then move to another. When you talk to people instead of at the crowd, you give the gift of your attention—and they’ll feel it.

Cheers

That’s it: stand up, pause, and connect. Those three simple steps will make your toast the most memorable one of your holiday gathering. Cheers!
