Be the Lighthouse

Are you a leader in your organization? What type of presence do you have?

In today’s vlog, Dean discusses the different types of presence and what you can do to elevate your own presence to inspire the presence of others.

Leadership Presence: Be the Lighthouse

If you’re a leader in your organization, here’s a question worth asking:

What is your presence?

We use terms like executive presence and leadership presence all the time.

But what do they actually mean?

At its core, presence is simple:

How do you show up — and how does that affect everyone around you?

Presence Isn’t Just One Thing Anymore

There was a time when presence was mostly in-person.

You walked into a room, and your presence carried the moment.

Today, it’s more complex.

You now have multiple versions of presence:

  • Your in-person leadership presence
  • Your screen presence in virtual meetings
  • Your stage presence when presenting
  • Your hybrid presence when audiences are both in-room and remote

In leadership presence coaching, virtual presentation skills coaching, and hybrid presentation skills, this expanded landscape is one of the biggest challenges leaders face.

The Lighthouse Metaphor

Think of a lighthouse.

The entire purpose of a lighthouse is its light.

That light guides others.

It illuminates the path.

It helps people navigate safely.

As a leader, you are that light.

Your presence sets the tone for everything below you.

Why Modeling Matters More Than Training

I’ve seen this play out again and again.

In one organization, we trained team members to elevate their communication and AEC presentation skills.

Individually, they improved.

But when they came back together with leadership, those skills disappeared.

Why?

Because leadership wasn’t modeling them.

In executive presentation coaching and group presentation coaching, this is a consistent truth:

If leaders don’t model it, teams won’t sustain it.

When Leaders Get It Right

On the flip side, I worked with a team pursuing a major opportunity.

The leader at the top embodied presence.

She brought:

  • Confidence and clarity
  • Warmth and connection
  • Strength and empathy

She modeled the behavior.

And the team followed.

People stepped out of their comfort zones.

The entire group elevated.

They won the project.

That’s the power of leadership presence.

Command and Nurture: The Balanced Leader

Great presence isn’t one-dimensional.

It’s a balance.

We often describe it as:

Command and nurture.

  • Command: strength, clarity, confidence
  • Nurture: warmth, empathy, connection

In executive presence coaching and Leadership Presentation Coaching, this balance creates influence.

Too much command feels rigid.

Too much nurture feels soft.

Together, they create a powerful, trustworthy leader.

Your Presence Sets the Standard

Whether you realize it or not, your team is watching you.

They’re paying attention to:

  • How you communicate
  • How you show up
  • How you engage with others

And they’re adjusting their own behavior accordingly.

In business development communication training and confident presence work, this top-down influence shapes the entire culture.

Be the Light

If you want your team to elevate, it starts with you.

Be intentional about your presence.

Develop it.

Refine it.

Model it.

Because as a leader, you are the lighthouse.

And your presence is the light that guides everyone else forward.
