Are You Holding Yourself Back?

Part of the natural process of growing up human is making decisions about who you and who you are not, what you will and won’t do, and what your limits are. And very often, those decisions are right on. But what if circumstances change and our decisions don’t get revisited? In his latest vlog post, Pete explores how your past decisions might be holding yourself back from heading into the future that you want for yourself.

Are You Limiting Your Own Presence?

I worked with a leader preparing to guide his team through a high-stakes interview. He made a real investment — in strategy, in message design, in rehearsals. We did the full arc of AEC interview preparation and shortlist interview training together.

At the very end, we talked about something simple: how he was going to show up visually.

I suggested he elevate his look slightly. Nothing dramatic. No tie required. Just a step up to reflect the level of leadership he was bringing into the room.

He said, “That’s not me.”

I pushed briefly… then backed off.

He didn’t win the project.

And it raised a bigger question.

The Identity Trap

We all define ourselves in certain ways:

  • “This is how I dress.”
  • “This is how I present.”
  • “This is just who I am.”

Those definitions can feel grounding. But over time, they can also become limiting.

In leadership presence coaching and executive presence coaching, I often see professionals who have the skill, the experience, and the insight — but are unknowingly holding themselves back because of how they’ve defined themselves.

They’re not lacking ability.

They’re lacking flexibility.

High-Stakes Moments Require Adaptation

In everyday work, your default style might serve you well.

But in high-stakes situations — project interview preparation, sales pitch coaching, or shareholder meeting presentation coaching — the expectations shift.

The room is different.

The stakes are higher.

And sometimes, the version of you that shows up every day isn’t the version that will be most effective in that moment.

This isn’t about being fake.

It’s about being intentional.

Presence Is More Flexible Than You Think

In Leadership Presentation Coaching and leadership confidence training, we talk about presence as something you can adjust.

It’s not fixed.

It’s not permanent.

It’s a set of choices.

Your attire. Your tone. Your posture. Your energy. Your delivery.

All of these can shift depending on what the moment requires.

When you allow that flexibility, your confident presence expands. When you resist it, you may unintentionally cap your effectiveness.

Ask Yourself a Different Question

Instead of asking, “Is that me?”

Try asking:

  • “Is this version of me serving this moment?”
  • “What would be most effective right now?”
  • “What version of me does this opportunity call for?”

In AEC presentation skills, business speaking, and executive presentation coaching, growth often begins with those questions.

Expand, Don’t Replace

You don’t have to abandon who you are.

You just have to expand it.

To include more options. More range. More adaptability.

Because sometimes the biggest limitation isn’t your capability.

It’s the box you’ve placed around it.

And when you loosen that box, you may discover that you’ve been holding yourself back in ways you didn’t even recognize.
