It’s all about the smoke and mirror. Not smoke and mirrors, but the smoke and mirror. When you’re coaching teams to get to a really, really powerful place so that they present well, so that they interview well, so that they meet new people well, so that they know what to say, and so that they can have their winning presence. You want to be a mirror to them. You don’t want to be a critic to them. And part of the art, the secret to the trade is you want to be the mirror to them that believes in them. They’re going to be looking at you. So, you stay away from practicing in the mirror. You stay away from recording people and showing them what they’re like. What you do instead is you be their mirror. You see them and they watch you seeing them. And from that vantage, what you do is you believe into them. You believe at them. You believe in front of them. You believe until they believe. Because the person who believes in themselves can outperform a person with skills, their articulation, even an amazing message. A lot of times the spoken word is about your words. It’s not about perfection, maybe not even elegance. It’s about how you can share your truth. So I want you to think about this concept. You’re the smoking mirror and you’re going to be smoking with belief and excitement about them. And as they keep looking to you and locking to you as their coach, as the person guiding them, or your friend giving advice, you’re going to increase their self-belief. And self-belief will carry the day.
