I’ve had a number of conversations with business professionals and leaders over the years talking about their confidence and their ability to present and a number of them have said you know I do just fine when I believe in what I’m saying when I believe in my message and my gut reaction to that statement is that’s fantastic and I don’t think you should try to get any better than that and what I mean by that is I don’t think people should be comfortable presenting a message that they don’t believe in and at the same time I believe that leaders shouldn’t give messages to other people on their team that those people don’t believe believe in if you have a gut that tells you you know this there’s something up with this message this isn’t good for the audience this isn’t something that I can condone this isn’t something that I agree with then you shouldn’t represent that message and I would suggest that maybe that message shouldn’t get communicated now this is isn’t the same thing as like feeling bad about bad news that you have to deliver this isn’t about discomfort with the end result of the message that you need to communicate there are plenty of circumstances where yeah this is tough but I do believe in it and I do need to represent it there are plenty of circumstances like that where 100% makes sense that you feel less than great delivering it but you should deliver it what I’m talking about is messages where you feel like you know this isn’t honest or this isn’t right or this doesn’t serve the relationship or this doesn’t serve the people that I’m talking to there’s something that I just can’t or won’t or don’t buy into if you are ever asked to deliver a message like that I recommend pushing back because you know your gut tells you to do so so listen to your gut and whenever it tells you you know what I just don’t believe in that I just can’t represent it stay true to yourself stay true with your gut and engage with the person who’s asking you to deliver that message and see if you can con collaborate on a different version of this message a different message that you do believe that you can buy into
